Do you smell that??

Posted by humphreysworld on November 3, 2010

This morning on my way to work, I smelled a foul stench. It continued on as I was working my way via metro to work, and I thought someone ripped a big one. Then I realized it was the foul stench of change. And it wasn’t pleasant. Like, you- ate- too- much- KFC unpleasant. It just fuckin’ stinks.

Now don’t get me wrong, this was NOT 1994 type takeover. In 1994 the right wing majority swept through both houses and took over, making progress a thing of the past. We didn’t lose the Senate which, let’s be honest, is the one that really counts. But that doesn’t mean that this doesn’t suck.

“This is not a time for compromise, and I can tell you that we will not compromise on our principles.” That is what your soon-to-be Speaker of the House cry baby Boehner said last week on the Barf Hannity show. Let me get this straight- for the past 18 months they have been whining about not getting what they want, complaining that the democrats weren’t playing nice, and bitching that democrats were too partisan. And he makes a statement like this? For those of you who think you haven’t seen enough change, well get ready. Because the next two years are going to be like the stale fruit cake you keep trying to pass off to your guests. That shit ain’t going anywhere.

This week will be the political blame game. I love games so I’d like to join in. My first finger wag goes to the democrats. Since there is no such thing as a progressive party, I can only call myself a democrat, and I have been a registered democrat since the age of 18. In fact, I was a volunteer at the age of 17 during 1992 which was a great year for Democrats. But somewhere along the way, someone cut the collective balls of my party and rendered them complete and utter wimps. We’re a peace loving people, but clearly the idea of power and authority scares a lot of us. And those who have not been scared away have been corrupted by it. The end result is a party that can’t ever quite get things together. And in fact, it was that takeover in 1994 that shook the dems boots so much and since then, they’ve been walking around like they pissed themselves and are embarrassed to say anything. You remember that kid don’t you? Yeah, I hate to say it, but he got bullied. And so did the dems.  For 12 loooong years. We sat completely neutered while the republicans took us into a senseless war, ran rampant with every industry they could and rendered your dollar completely useless. And then, a glimmer of hope, in the form of Barack Obama. He was smart and driven, and everyone saw something in him that we hadn’t seen in the party in a long time- fire. All the sudden, it appeared as though we would actually get it together. Hell we even reclaimed the house and when Obama was elected made that margin even bigger and reclaimed the Senate! What did we do with it? We blew it. Got lazy, got complacent, got greedy and blew it. We began fighting with each other and once again allowed the repubs to control the debate. Way to go dems!!! Bad, bad dems!!!

My second finger wag- and I am using the pointer finger, the most powerful of finger wagging capabilities!- is to the American people. People, wtf??? I’d like to believe you are not this dumb, but sadly you’ve given me no proof of that. For some reason, you were under the impression that change happens overnight. Sorry, that’s not how it works. ESPECIALLY when we had 8 years of crap to clean up. He’s not Jesus folks, no matter how amazing he seemed. But since your dollar still really meant 60 cents (try being a woman or minority, our dollar already is shit), 2 months after the election, you were looking for someone to blame. And then health care reform came along and you were sooo quick to believe what you were told. Never questioned anything. They told you it was socialism and you took the bait. Half of you don’t even know how to spell socialism, let alone know what it means. But I will share my opinion on our failing school system for another post. Once again you fell for their lies. For shame! If in two years you turn around and realize that not a damn thing has changed, and you’re still in the shitty position you were in as you were when you cast your ballot yesterday, the only person you should wag your finger at is you.

In 2004 when Bush was elected for the first time legally, I felt lower than I ever felt about anything in a long time. I felt hopeless, I felt like all my work on campaigns for months meant nothing, and that my freedoms were going to continue to roll back, one by one. I don’t feel like that today. I’m bummed, don’t get me wrong. Key legislation like fair pay for women, climate change bills, further consumer protections, don’t ask don’t tell, and others will never see the light of day during the next two years. But if the democrats on the Hill and in the streets ever needed to pay attention to a wake up call, this is it. And I feel like they will. They had better, my french isn’t good enough yet to be able to move to France. And dammit, I love my country. But it needs some work. And unless you want to return to the dark ages, we need to all do something about it. Mourn today. Buy yourself copious amounts of alcohol and drown your sorrows (particularly if you’re in WI, VA, PA, or FL-wtf??). But then its time to get to work.
